IPL conjures a ‘purple’ cap for the leading wicket-taking bowler

After introducing the 'Orange Cap' for the highest run-getter, Indian Premier League (IPL) announced a 'Purple Cap' for the highest wicket-taking bowler as well.

It has also instituted a Winner of the Purple Cup2008 for the bowler with the most cumulative number of wickets at the end of the season.

It's not for nothing that in India, if you are trying to "Cap" someone, it means you are trying to fool someone. I think the phrase came into being after Modi took over as the IPL Commissioner. It's not Balaji, but Modi who's the actual hat-trick guy.

In Tamil a cap is called a 'kulla'. Which means 'a buffoon or a fool' in the colloquial sense.

Looks like we are have all been 'capped'.:)
